Freedive

My number 1 tip: take an AIDA freedive course! There are numerous freedive bodies and certifications out there. AIDA is non-profit and stay on top of the latest research in order to provide the best and most safe freedive education.  Find a school/instructor on the AIDA website. I’m a qualified AIDA instructor as well.

My mermaid gear. Find it here.

Discovering freediving. What’s it all about?

My favourite freedive destination: BonaireHere’s why.

Manual of Freediving – Still the best book out there explaining all the ins and outs about freediving. Written by the superhuman Umberto Pelizzari (Amazon US, UK). As far as I know there are only hardcopies available.

Deep A book about freediving, renegade Science and What the Ocean Tells Us About Ourselves. (Amazon US , UK)

Breatheology – by Stig Aval Steverinsen (NL) (UK/Europe) (USA) We can live weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen. Optimize you breathing and optimize your life! Reading and applying techniques in this book are one of the best investments you can make!

Deeperblue A forum on diving & freediving. Updates, articles, gear, destinations discussions.

Apnea Trainer The breathing exercise app I use to train for freediving and stay strong.

After freediving fuel: Coconut Peanutbutter!! It’s my guilty pleasure and nurtures your muscles (&soul) right away.

Insurance

World Nomads For the glomads (global nomads)! Travel insurance for adventurers. Very good coverage! You can arrange and claim when you’re on the road already.

adventure-sports-travel-insurance

Centraal Beheer Achmea. Dutchies only. I’m with this insurance for a few years now and they have helped me out big-time when I had to break the travel and return to Holland for my sick grandma, when I sprained my ankle in Thailand, that time my external harddisk got damaged. It’s very affordable. I pay 3,50 euro/month + 6/euro/month for extra business coverage. AND, the best party, you are allowed to travel 365 days in a row!

ETA Insurance is one that got recommended to me as a good insurance for UK based outdoor fanatics.

Back up

Crashplan Backs up all your data automatically in the cloud when you connect. My harddisk has crashed before. Never ever again I will lose a photo memory. It’s worth the 3$ per month!

BackBlaze Online back up cloud for your laptop and external harddisk. It’s works smooth and automatic. You can try for free for 15 days. Then it costs 5$/month. It’s worth the peace of mind to never ever loose photo or video footage again. BackBlaze can also trace your laptop in case it gets stolen.

LaCie Rugged Mini External Harddrive (NL) (UK/Europe) (USA).: Harddisks are not made for travelling. This one is! You can drop it, splash it. It’s small, It has a 3.0 superfast usb port and stores 2 TB! Great for saving your video and raw photo footage while on the road.

Gear

What do I use?

What do I have in my plastic free, eco-concious travel kit? I wrote it all down here.

Get stuff second hand on Preloved: UK’s biggest buy and sell marketplace

Aquapac Waterproof your clothes, phone, camera, laptop, everything! I travel with this 70L waterproof Duffelbag. Very durable. I use the 25l waterproof daypack for the sailing, kitesurf and watersport adventures.

LifeProof To waterproof and beach proof my phone! Dropped it in the water twice now and still alive :)

Always have a hammock with you. Treklight is the lightest one I’ve found.

Wetsuits. The sea needs more colour. I’m a proud ambassador of the colourful Glidesoul wetsuits. Glidesoul is now on Amazon too.

Water-To-Go Filter drink bottle. I have it always with me and can drink straight from any tap or river! I never ever have to buy a plastic bottle again. (Discountcode: OCEAN via watertogo.nl)

Multi-purpose adventure shoes I recommend Merrell and Keen. Learn why.

Travel Camera

What do I use to capture the adventures? Compact travel camera with potential I use the Sony A 5100 (US) (UK) (NL). Basic version. Lens can be changed. If you like to travel and take your photography and video to the next level, this is your camera. Because it’s mirrorless it’s compact and it allows for high quality HD video. With interchangeable lenses the potential is huge. What I especially like about Sony is that it captures really good in low light scenes. It has wifi so you can instantly back up your photos, transfer them to you phone or ipad and update your fans. The price is extremely good for what you get. It’s durable. I’m a ‘rough’ traveller and this cam has survived the high seas, beach time and lots of explorations in nature. Go Pro (US) (UK) For my underwater and action I use the GoPro. I’ve tried alternatives. With the screen, hd quality and instant photo and video selection on your phone. It can’t be better. It’s quite an investment. But one you won’t regret. I I sometimes use a red Underwater filter to balance the colours. Budget tip: Intova is a high quality underwater camera alternative, wayyyy cheaper than GoPro Tripod (UKFor good photography and video a tripod is a must. This budget AND travel friendly Manfrotto tripod caters for both. It’s light, compact and allows for super smooth video shooting because of it’s ‘joystick’ handlebar.
